Jinyan Zhao, 2000

(Toronto, Canada / London, UK)

Jinyan Zhao (b. 2000) approaches art through the lens of curating, treating it as a methodology to explore perception, sensation, and spatial experience. She works with the “supporting structures” within systems that are typically seen as the background elements. Through form, gesture, and rhythm, she magnifies the unspoken and peripheral. In her work, micro-emotional states operate as structural forces, where she believes that “small intensities capable of transforming could alter the entire field of experience.” By reshaping narratives through corners of space, she examines how subtle interventions can reconfigure our embodied perception of the everyday. For her, the present moment is not a temporal point but an existential condition, an active site where emotion, matter, and space co-produce experience.

Currently based in London, Jinyan is an MFA candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Studies Studio Practice from the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. She is the founder and curator of “#everysixteenminutesapiecetogetherpoem”, an Annual Digital intervention project since May 2024. Her works have been exhibited at Hypha Studios, Safe House, and All is Joy Studio, as well as internationally in Toronto and Beijing.
